Biography:

Louise Phelan, from Limerick, Ireland, currently residing in Mexico City, has been teaching and sharing the Alexander Technique with performing artists (singers, actors, directors and musicians) for more than 20 years.

She qualified and graduated from the Alexander Technique Studio London (UK), having completed a three-year full-time course as well as a post-graduate awarded by STAT (the Society for Teachers of the Alexander Technique) under the direction of Karen Wentworth and Jean Fischer. She is a member of the Irish teachers’ society (ISATT) and is a co-founding member of the Mexican Association of Alexander Technique Teachers (APTAM), which is affiliated with ATAS International (Alexander Technique Affiliated Societies).

When she lived in London she worked at the ArtsEd performing arts centre under the direction of professor Penny O’Connor, at the Helios Centre for healthcare, and collaborated giving classes to the members of the London Symphony Orchestra, as well as at LAMDA and the Actor’s Studio.

In Ireland she has shared the AT in programs within the University of Limerick, with the Bare Space Theatre Company, with singers from Opera Ireland, musicians from Newpart Music Centre Dublin and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra of Ireland, as well as with the ME Trust for people with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, and MS Ireland Limerick Branch for carers and people living with Multiple Sclerosis.

In Estocolmo, Sweden, she was an invited professor at the National University of Music and gave regular courses at the Danscenter Stockholm centre of performing arts. She also offered workshops for choral groups at colleges and churches such as the Rainbow Gospel Choir.

Since January 2011, Louise has formed part of the teaching staff of the Sistema Nacional de Fomento Musical (SNFM) with the Orquesta Escuela Carlos Chavez and the Ensamble Escénica Vocal based in the cultural complex Los Pinos, Mexico City. She belongs to the Secretary of Culture (Secretaria de Cultura) and has travelled to different bases of the SNFM, most recently to Ciudad Juarez, Chih. to teach the AT to a group of 35 music teachers.

Since January 2014 she has worked in the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL) in Mexico City as a resident teacher at the Estudio de Ópera de Bellas Artes (EOBA), which forms part of the Compañía Nacional de Ópera (CNO), and has given several classes and workshops for colleagues within the various artistic groups of the INBAL, including concert artists, soloists, choirs and orchestras, throughout the years.

Every year she gives courses on Alexander Technique and managing stage fright for singers and musicians at the Universidad Panamericana in the Escuela de Bellas Artes Mexico City campus, collaborating with professor Gabriela Herrera and the other teaching staff of the artistic programs.

Since 2015 she has been a juror for the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y Las Artes (FONCA) for the the established groups of artists in residence at the INBA and the program of Performing Creators.

Louise enjoyed a pedagogical collaboration alongside Séverine Parent of the Cirque de Soleil and Raúl Bakero of the Tec de Monterey university in Nuevo Leon with Vocalery. She also gave a workshop at the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Los Angeles California, where she was invited by Bernardo Feldman. She has given courses to various members of the OCESA in collaboration with Claudia Romero (El Liceo) and with members of the cast of musicals by Gou Producciones.

She has taught courses and workshops at the following universities: Universidad Veracruzana, Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro and la Universidad Panamericana CDMX; and with the Compañía de Canto y Teatro Musical, and LiFE Arte y Cultura at the Tec de Monterrey campus in Santa Fe. She has participated in the Festival Internacional de Arte Escénica in Saltillo, Coahuila, collaborating with Joan Dornemann (Metropolitan Opera NYC), Josh Major (Boston Conservatory), Catherine Ciesinski (Eastman College NYC) and Teresa Rodríguez (SIVAM and EOBA). In 2020 she was a tutor at the opera workshop of the Festival Internacional de Alfonso Ortiz FAOT in Hermosillo and Álamos, and in 2021 she shared the AT virtually with the festival participants.

She has given intensive courses as well as seminars, talks, workshops and conferences (virtually during 2020 and 2021) with the Ópera Latinoamérica, the Instituto Músico Vocal de Occidente de Costa Rica, Conferencia Anual de AMMCA (Asociación Mexicana de Maestros de Canto), Educación Vocal México EduVocMex, and the Compañía Nacional de Teatro INBAL.

Since 2016 she has collaborated closely with professor Carlos Aransay (Spain), of the Royal Opera House London’s Young Artist Programme and now principal at the Coro de Madrigalistas de Bellas Artes. In September 2025 they led courses for singers and singing teachers at the Skaldheim Studio in Mexico City.

She was invited to give AT classes and performance coaching to the participants of ¨Voces de la Zarzuela¨ led by Zarzuela USA International in León Gto. in November 2025. She also led a diploma in Lyric Song in collaboration with Conectarte Puebla alongside Enivia Muré and Jesús Suaste (Sep-Dec 2025), as well as working in music and singing schools in Tehuacán and the city of Puebla in collaboration with Sujey Cajica and Henry Pacheco of the Centro Cultural Manuel M. Ponce - AT for physical awareness and artistic wellbeing.

Louise has an Alexander Technique teaching studio where she gives private classes to members of the public in Colonia Polanco, Mexico City. Alexander Technique Studio Mexico opened its doors in May 2024.

Louise has been a professional singer and singer-songwriter for more than 30 years, with four albums under her own name and more than eight albums recorded in national and international collaborations. She principally works in the genres of Jazz, Blues, and World Music mixed with Celtic Music. She performs in concerts and festivals, theatres and renowned venues both in Mexico and Europe.
