Biography:

Director of Escuela de Técnica Alexander México (ETAM)

Claudia Montero is the first Mexican AT teacher to graduate from the Victoria Training Course for the Alexander Technique in London (1991), a school endorsed by the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT). She also obtained her Bachelor’s of Education in the Arts from the Universidad Veracruzana (2014).

She is a founding member of the Mexican Association of Alexander Technique Teachers (APTAM).

In 2015, she founded ETAM (Escuela de Técnica Alexander México), the first Alexander Technique teacher training program in the country.

From 2010 to this day, Claudia teaches Alexander Technique at the Sistema Nacional de Fomento Musical, a national music institution created by the Secretary of Culture in Mexico.

Since 2023, she is a faculty member of the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mexico City.

Claudia organized the workshops Connection and flow and Space, movement and sound, taught by Pedro de Alcántara at CENART in Mexico City (2018). A project funded by the National Arts and Culture Fund (FONCA) and the National Center for the Arts (CENART).

Ever since her return to Mexico as a newly certified Alexander Technique teacher, Claudia has taught private lessons to students from all walks of life; each with different needs based on their occupation, as well as personal and medical necessities.

She has taught a wide variety of courses in many institutions, including at the Conservatorio de Música del Estado de México; the Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia, Michoacán; at Escuela Ollin Yoliztli; the UNAM Faculty of Music; both the Music and Theater Faculties at the Universidad Veracruzana; the 5° Music and Musicology Festival of the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC); the V and VI Encuentro Regional de Instrumentos de Aliento para Bandas, in Mérida, Yucatán; the Escuela Nacional de Arte Teatral and the Complementary Concentration department of the CENART, where she taught classes for students of all of the Center’s different schools; at CEUVOZ; Taller continuo at Fig Health in Mexico City; the Arts department of the Autonomous University of Hidalgo (UAEH); the Autonomous University of Sonora; taught members of the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de Guanajuato, as well as teachers from the Yamaha Music Academy.

She also taught at the 4° and 5° Encuentro Violoncellístico de Aguascalientes; both the Interdisciplinary Association for the development of Arts and Culture and the Encuentro Nacional de Canto en Parral, in Chihuahua; Festival de Marzo of the Arts Faculty of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua; the 3rd edition of the Formandi Festival in cooperation with the University of Guadalajara (UdG); the 1st Healthy Practices for violists and violinists course in Aguascalientes; the intro to Alexander Technique online workshop at the Programa Entretiempo, for the Centro de Estudios Musicales Rec Música; the intro to AT online workshop at the Encuentro de Metales of the Autonomous University of Querétaro; and the online workshop for musicians of the County of Querétaro.

As well as AT intro courses at the Taller Internacional de Violas de las Américas; the Mexican Viola Society; Colectivo de Contrabajos; Asociación de Música para la Vida, in San Luis Potosí; Center of Arts, Architecture and Design of the University of Guadalajara (2022–2024); Asociación México a través del Arte in Chihuahua; Instituto Sinaloense de Cultura; and the Pedal Harp Week at the Escuela Superior de Música, CENART.

Claudia has also given talks about the use and benefits of the Alexander Technique in: At home, in the workshop and the office, Stage presence, and Sex and sexuality, as part of the Cycle to spread awareness by APTAM.

She was a faculty member of the Diploma in Somatic Education of the Universidad Abierta Interamericana in Rosario, Argentina.

Claudia Montero is a member of the Mexican Network of Healthy Conservatoires (RMCS), sharing their interest in creating conditions for healthier practices in education, particularly in the arts. In the spirit of this work, she has offered two presentations, one for the Conservatorio Nacional de Música, and the online presentation Descubriendo la armonía: Alexander Technique as a transformative agent in Arts Education, at the second encounter of the RMCS.

She has offered conferences and masterclasses at the Escuela Nacional de Música UNAM; the Department of Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Hospital 20 de Noviembre ISSSTE, and the Encuentro Internacional de Escuelas Superiores de Teatro, both taking place at INBA; and the Instituto Superior de Música del Estado de Veracruz.

Claudia Montero expanded her Alexander Technique education by doing postgraduate studies at The Center for the Alexander Technique in London, and at the Escuela de Técnica Alexander de Buenos Aires, both with the goal of founding the Escuela de Técnica Alexander en México and its teacher training program. As well as having studied with Penelope Easten and Peter Grunwald.
